Risk Assessment Policy
Applies to all clubs, classes, workshops, and sessions run by:
Drama Club Salisbury, Make and Create Salisbury, and Make Create Perform and Grow Salisbury
1. Statement of Intent
We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all children, staff, volunteers, and visitors. Risk assessments are a key part of our safety management, ensuring we identify and mitigate potential hazards before they cause harm.

2. Purpose of Risk Assessment
To identify potential hazards and risks associated with activities, venues, equipment, and events.
To evaluate the level of risk and take action to reduce it to an acceptable level.
To promote safe practices and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.

3. Scope
This policy applies to:
- All venues used for regular sessions and workshops.
- All off-site trips or performances.
- Any activity involving children, staff, and volunteers.
- Equipment, materials, and environmental conditions.

4. Responsibilities
Rosie Burgess, as the lead organiser, holds overall responsibility for ensuring that risk assessments are:
- Completed and reviewed regularly.
- Specific to each type of session or activity.
- Communicated clearly to staff and volunteers.
- Staff and Volunteers are responsible for:
- Familiarising themselves with relevant risk assessments.
- Following control measures outlined in the risk assessments.
- Reporting any new risks or safety concerns promptly.

5. Types of Risk Assessments
Risk assessments are carried out for:
Venues – including condition, access, fire safety, and layout.
Activities – including physical movement, use of tools or props, craft materials, performance rehearsals.
Trips and events – including transport arrangements and site-specific risks.
Individuals – including known medical needs, allergies, SEND considerations.

- Slips, trips, and falls
- Fire safety and evacuation
- Supervision ratios
- Access control and safeguarding
- Allergies and medical emergencies
- Use of equipment and materials
- COVID-19 or other infectious disease protocols (when relevant)
- Weather conditions for outdoor sessions

7. Control Measures
- Venues are checked before each session.
- Emergency contact details and medical info are kept up to date and accessible.
- First aid kits are available at every session and staff know how to use them.
- Staff and volunteers are briefed on relevant risks and emergency procedures.
- Risk assessments are reviewed at least annually or after any incident.

8. Recording and Reviewing Risk Assessments
All formal risk assessments are recorded and stored securely.
Informal dynamic risk assessments (on-the-spot evaluations) are also encouraged as part of daily practice.
All risk assessments are reviewed:
- Annually
- When activities change significantly
- Following an incident or near miss
9. Training and Awareness
Staff and volunteers receive training on risk awareness and safety procedures during induction and at regular intervals.
Children are informed of safety rules in a clear, age-appropriate manner.
